Very early potatoes

Even earlier than the first earlys in the main garden, the tubers that are planted in the frames should be ready by very early summer (May, if it all goes according to plan). The Victorian seed merchant excelled at providing his customers with a huge spread of varieties, enabling the cropping season to last as long as possible. The two grown here were developed in the mid nineteenth century, Early Rose and Myatts Ashleaf, and remained popular well into the last century. We are very pleased to grow these unique varieties here at Heligan, preserving their distinct flavour and properties for the future.
